our most recent adventure...

Mountain Skills

With winter temperatures having finally arrived and Andy having recently completed his Mountain Leader training at Glenmore Lodge we headed out onto the hill to get a bit of navigation and rope work practice in whilst enjoying the bracing air of the winter hills.

Beinn Each, a Corbett just outside Callander was our destination. The weather looked truly foul with fog making visibility on the roads down to about 40 meters but we persevered and were rewarded with a fantastic temperature inversion and some incredible views as we made our way up the hill.

Andy, fresh from the Lodge, paced throughout the day until we found ourselves at a perfect rock outcrop that allowed for some serious rope practice for security on steep ground. Tasked with finding suitable anchors, Andy set about proving himself with a variety of direct and indirect belays.

We finished that off with some rather painful practice in abseiling using only a rope…..OUCH!

It’s important that when we lead our Scouts on an adventure on the hills we do so safe in the knowledge that our skills are suitable to cope with whatever life may throw at us. To that end we are committed to ensuring that our Leaders have the very best training, and more importantly, opportunity, to practice their skills.

We finished with an ascent of Beinn Each before descending via its northern (and significantly trickier) side and our return to the vehicle.

The most dangerous part of the days route (with the obvious exception of the roads there and back) was the path at the start seeing as it never rose above freezing all day making for some serious ice on the walkways!!

Our next Hill Skills day will be between Xmas and New Year. All Leaders and Helpers are more than welcome.

being prepared!

First Aid Training

Following on from the successful First Aid course for three of our section leaders and helpers we now have considerable first aid cover for all groups. On February 1st 2010 we have a training event for all leaders / helpers from the British Heart Foundation to teach delivery of the Heartstart programme to all sections as well as adults. No previous first aid experience is necessary as all instruction and subsequent support will be given. We plan to introduce Heartstart to the community via our very own Bothwell Scouts Heartstart Group as soon as possible after training.
